1. Adjust Your Wash Routine
Your hair washing schedule is deeply personal. No seriously, so many factors go into it. how often you work out, what type and how often you use dry shampoo, as well as your body chemistry. Typically I suggest washing every 2/3 days. However you will discover the best wash strategy for yourself through some trial and error. I can confidently say say washing everyday is too often & it will surly disrupt your scalps delicate oil balance not to mention drying your ends out. While on the flip side being aggressive with dry shampoo and only washing weekly can also leave you with dry ends and clogged pores. This leads to premature shedding and dandruff. Some hair types can go a week without washing no problem the clue to whether this is you is how much dry shampoo you are using to extend that long. Let your hair be your guide. what I have noticed in the last 20 years as a stylist is the day your hair looks the best is your last day before washing is needed. once your hair peaks do not push it an additional day.
P.S. Do not shampoo the ends of your hair, shampoo is designed for your scalp.
2. Detangle, Then Brush
this tip is so simple we often mess it up! To be clear, detangle first from your ends to your roots. this will ensure you are not breaking your hair and causing split ends. Next brush your your and scalp from the roots to ends, this stimulates your scalp and helps move your natural oils/ natural protective barrier to the ends of your hair.
3. Get Regular Trims
When your hair gets dry/ damaged it starts to fray. The cuticle layer is splitting open, kind of like getting a hangnail. If you don't trim it off the split end will fray higher up on the hair strand. When you do finally go in for the trim your hair is not any longer, the split ends have climbed causing breakage and now your stylist will have to cut more off. At the end of the day the lesson is trim regularly.
4. Condition with Consistency
When I developed Refuge Hair Care Systems the cream masks and conditioning balm were formulated to give hair essential nutrients and also fortify & protect the cuticle, your hair's outer most layer. Masking weekly and using our conditioning balm with every wash can ensure those split ends are a problem of the past.
]]>No, your hair can’t get sunburned like your skin. However, if you’re in the sun for more than a couple of hours, UV rays can seriously damage your hair! UVA and UVB rays damage the outside layer of the hair (which is called the cuticle) and this can lead to frizzy, dry hair that’s riddled with split ends. The sun can even make your color fade, leaving you with dull and lifeless hair.
That’s why UV protection is a must! We suggest treating your hair with our our REPAIR + PROTECT 3-STEP SYSTEM prior to your time in the sun. Helping to shield your hair from heat and UV rays as well as protect against future damage.
I can remember dreading the times when Mom would brush my hair as little kid, because it felt like she was trying to yank all of my hair out instead of detangle it. Turns out, she was brushing my hair all wrong. The trick is to start brushing at your ends and work your way up to your roots. That way, you work through the tangles little bits at a time—instead of damaging delicate wet strands. So, remember to brush from the bottom up and use a dressing brush with two different lengths of bristles to minimize breakage this summer!
Wearing your pony in the same spot every time you put your hair up can cause your hair to break from all the tension. So, mix it up! If you wear your hair in a ponytail today, try braiding your hair or throwing it up in a messy bun next time you wear it up. Plus, using silk scrunchies—instead of elastic hair ties—can help prevent damaging strands (which will help you avoid those unruly fly-a-ways!)

As a kid, I used to love wrapping a towel around my hair, but now I know how to treat my strands better. Wet hair is particularly susceptible to damage, and towel drying your hair can cause breakage.
Start: using a t-shirt or microfiber towel.
A microfiber (or cotton t-shirt) will absorb excess water, reduce frizz, and help prevent breakage. And using a microfiber towel can actually make your hair easier to style! Just make sure to blot, not rub your hair to absorb moisture.
Don’t get me wrong—everyone should be washing their hair. But washing your hair too frequently can strip your scalp of its natural oils and make it dry, which can cause even more issues.
Start: washing according to your hair needs.
There is no magic number when it comes to washing your hair. So, I recommend using trial and error to find the right amount of days in between washes. Start washing your hair every two days, then see how many days you can stretch in between washes to find the perfect number for you hair.
When you don’t trim your hair, you’re left with damaged ends, which can cause breakage and make your hair look shorter, since it’s thinner at the bottom.
Start: getting regular haircuts.
Just do it, schedule regular trims! Cut just a quarter inch, about every eight to twelve weeks (especially if your locks are prone to damage) for fuller, healthier hair.
Our Refuge Crème Masks help protect your hair from daily stressors (like heat used in styling and UV rays) that cause damage to your hair. When you skip your mask, or fail to use one regularly, you are leaving your hair prone to damage—which can lead to more and more bad hair days.
Start: Treating with a Refuge Hair Care routine (which includes a concentrated Clay Shampoo, Crème Mask, and Conditioning Balm)
Find you’re ideal Refuge Hair Care Routine and stick to it. Indulging in our 3-Step Hair Care System only takes about 10 minutes from start to finish, and will help you achieve your hair goals. Plus, it’s always nice to take a little extra self care time to indulge in yourself!

SULFATE FREE • PARABEN FREE • CRUELTY FREE • COLOR SAFE
]]>For 2 years I developed the NOURISH + GROW system. The first step was to identify that ingredients that would give big impact without weighing hair down. Fennel Seed Extract is a natural dilator. This ready's your scalp to welcome in other essential ingredients that will aid in rejuvenating your scalp and hair. Almond Protein fortifies your strands reducing breakage, leaving your hair stronger and thicker while naturally derived Tripeptides strengthen your hair follicles to help fight premature hair loss.
Bringing your hair back to its prime is not only doable it is simple. No more harsh cleansers! Sulfates may enable our shampoo to lather well however they strip our hair of much needed moisture leaving a faded, shallow tone behind. Instead we can rely on natural and gentle cleansers. Refuge Hair uses our Step 1, Clay Shampoo to gently cleanse. White clay purifies the scalp while coconut oil gently cleanses. We also ditched the silicones. Coating your hair makes it shiny for the day, but it also weighs your hair down so it no longer has natural bounce. In REFUGE hair systems after you cleanse, you mask. Our step 2, Crème Mask ensures your hair and scalp get the essentials it needs to thrive and only after we seal in the goodness with step 3, Conditioning Balm.
Whether you need to enhance your naturally fine hair with Nourish + Grow, strengthen weak and fragile hair with Repair + Protect, or simply quench thirsty hair with Hydrate + Balance, we have got your back. Healthy hair is a click away.

My take away? We all abuse our hair. No matter how hard we try, we just can’t resist the urge to color, curl, straighten, blow dry, bleach and tease. What’s worse, most of us do absolutely nothing to build our hair back up. I’m on a mission to change that. I believe that your shower can be your own personal salon. That your lather and rinse should also repair and restore. And that getting professional results should be simple and affordable. Formulated in a salon by expert stylists, each Refuge system gives your hair exactly what it needs to look its healthiest and gives you the simple self-care routine you deserve.
I founded Refuge Hair with 3 beliefs. Quality clean beauty hair care should be at the core of your hair health routine, professional results shouldn’t break your bank, and that your hair care should target your unique needs as your hair evolves.
Healthy hair starts, here.
